Vaslui - Omonia - 2009

The match didn't start very well for Romanians. The guests had a better possession and managed to get to the post more often that the players of Cristi Dulca. Omonia had the first two opportunities of the match, but Zlogar (8) headed beside the post and Kuciak caught the ball headed by Zurawski (26). But the defensive game of Vaslui paid off after all. Mike Temwanjera opened the score in 19th minute, after an action in which Gerlem hit both bars of Kotsolis' post. From this moment Vaslui took the initiative and started to control the game. The same Temwanjera was close to score again in 33rd minute, while Ghencev sent a torpedo from 30 meters, but a little over the post of Kotsolis (43). The strikers of Omonia were almost totally annihilated in second half. Temwanjera increased the difference in 55th minute, while Wesley (64) was close to score the third goal, but his lob missed the post. Omonia missed a good opportunity in 71st minute, through Bruno Aguiar, only from two meters... The rest of attempts of Takis Lemonis' players remained without result on the scoreboard and FC Vaslui obtained a first success.

Cristi Dulca, coach of FC Vaslui: "It's a good result, but not enough for qualification. Omonia is a dangerous team, but we managed to take advantage of their mistakes. We must prepare very well the second leg because it will be a more difficult match. We knew they are better on counter attack and at set pieces, so we managed to neutralize them. However, the qualification isn't played yet, so at Nicosia we will play like the score would have been 0-0".

Takis Lemonis, coach of Omonia: "The final result isn't exactly fair, as the two teams have played. I am pleased by the way my players did their job. Vaslui had no opportunity except the goals, but this is the football and at this level you must pay when you make mistakes. I am sure that we can solve qualification in second leg. The chances remain 50-50".
